OPEN M (“Opportunity Park Ecumenical Neighborhood Ministry”) is a nonprofit neighborhood-based, comprehensive ministry with which St. Paul’s has a long-standing connection, both collectively as a parish and individually through members who volunteer their time. OPEN M, located at 941 Princeton Street in Akron, provides numerous services including a food pantry and a hot lunch program; tutoring, mentoring and summer camp opportunities for children; a free medical clinic (the only one in Summit County!); and various other programs designed to help low-income and welfare families break the cycle of poverty.
As a parish, St. Paul’s has contributed portions of the Christmas Fund to OPEN M, we have donated peanut butter for the food pantry and food items for Christmas baskets, we have a sponsored and participated in the Walk For Kids, and we have made both financial and in-kind contributions to the medical clinic and its pharmacy. Look for information about current collections, activities, and other projects in the newsletter and Sunday bulletins!
Individually, many members of the parish volunteer their time to work in various capacities at OPEN M, including service on the Women’s Board and the Board of Trustees and work in the medical clinic. New volunteers are always welcome (and needed!). Volunteer opportunities at OPEN M include general office work, helping in the pharmacy, tutoring students, helping to serve and clean up after hot lunches, stocking food, mentoring, as well as skilled medical work in the clinic.
